A whisky shop that the Old SNOTS have ordered from in the past (and one I have visited in person at least four or five times) is Loch Fyne Whisky in the small village of Inverary.   They have a superb website with descriptions of each of the whiskies they sell that are absolutely brilliant.  Reading their comments is nearly as entertaining as dreaming of sampling all the whisky they sell.  In their own words, the little shop is an “ACE!”  I highly recommend visiting in person and perusing their website.

[A quick note about Loch Fyne.  I just received a large order from them and everything was perfect, except one bottle got damaged in transit.  I emailed them and right away received a response that they would replace the bottle at no charge.   Are these great people or what?]

The Scottish Arms is a St Louis restaurant devoted to Scottish cuisine, beer and, of course, single malt whisky.  Of particular interest to The Old SNOTS, the Scottish Arms offers several different methods of sampling among the largest collection of single malts I’ve seen at any bar or restaurant in the St Louis Metro area.  And their food is absolutely superb.  Highly recommended!

The Wine Merchant on Hanley Road in Clayton has one of the best selections of single malt whisky in the St Louis area.   Not only do they have shelf upon shelf of single malt whiskies, including whisky from the major independent bottlers and a large selection of high-end single malts, but they also host single malt tastings periodically.  I recommend visiting and putting your name on their wine and single malt email lists.  And while you’re there, soften the blow of spending $100 on whisky by buying your wife a gourmet cheese and an accomanying fine wine from their award winning selection.

These two websites, provided by Mike Day, are simply the best for whisky education.  The first link shows maps with the relative locations of all the Scottish distilleries.  You can click on a name and be taken to details about the distillery.   The second has sound clips of how to pronounce the distillery names.  I’d bookmark these links and refer to them before an Old SNOTS gathering.  That way you’ll be able to talk with some authority about the whisky being sampled and, better yet, you’ll be able to say it’s name properly.

Whisky.com is the world’s largest site about Scotch and Bourbon Whisky.

Cobhthaigh Celtique is the online store that provided The Old SNOTS their Glencairn whisky glasses.  They have the best prices I’ve seen for the Glencairn glass and wide variety of items for sale to please the whisky enthusiast and the die-hard Scotsman.  Dave and Marty Coffey are incredibly accomodating (something that’s rare today) and about the nicest people to deal with you’ll find in this digital age.  BONUS:  They’ve added a link to the Old SNOTS on their webpage.  Visit them often, and if you purchase something, make sure you tell them that the Old SNOTS sent you.

We’ve discovered another whisky tasting group on the Missouri side of the river.  They call themselves the Bureau of Malt Sippers . . . or The BUMS.  They describe themselves this way:

Sharing our near-obsession with Uisge Beatha, or Whisky, The BUMS meet occasionally and taste our way through the distilleries of Scotland.  We’d like to share some of the information we’ve discovered and the opinions we’ve developed about the drams we’ve tasted so far.
The journey is about discovery, the pleasures of the palate and camaraderie over rich, mysterious drams.

Hi Steve,
I’m here at the KMCC Hotel in Ramstein and have a not-quite-full bottle of Glenmorangie 10 y/o. If you happen to be in the area around 6 May 2010 look me up. It’s your fault that I can no longer stand cheap scotch and you have to help me drink this stuff! I know it’s at the low end of The Old Snots tasting range, but it is still your fault that Jim Beam makes me want to wretch looking at the bottle!

You have no idea how proud of myself I am now. If I can do that for you, I’ve really accomplished something. Now, if I can just get you converted to a west Scotland or island whisky . . . I don’t anticipate that I’ll get to Germany until June, so enjoy it while you’re there.

About the Old SNOTS

SNOTS = Scotch Nosing Or Tasting Society

A group of men and women from all walks of life and all parts of the globe who, when the situation permits, warrants or demands, succumb to the reverence of Scotland’s most distinctive product—uisghe beatha, water of life, single malt whisky—and firmly of the conviction that “Whisky may not cure the common cold, but it fails more agreeably than most other things.”
